Meeting Brian is a study in contrasts. On the one hand, he's this 6'4" guy who is incredibly down to earth, utterly approachable and an "Average Joe" who puts people at ease the instant they meet him. On the other hand, Brian's a creative visionary and truly innovative thinker who brings a passion and focus to his work that is unmistakable.

The contrasts are remarkable: He's attentive but artistic, imaginative but directed, carefree but intensely devoted to his craft. The most amazing aspect of Brian is that these seemingly opposing characteristics blend together so effortlessly.

Outside of photography, he's an accomplished mountaineer, triathlete and skilled wooden boatbuilder. He's a former Utah based ski patroller, Outward Bound Instructor, Central American river guide, US Coast Guard Captain and EMT to name a few.

He's obsessed with creating authentic, clean and unique storytelling images and films that capture elements of craftsmanship, adventure, beauty, health and style. He has been working as a Creative Director, Art Director and photographer for going on twenty years.

Brian's academic background includes Bowdoin College and Brown University, but his photography career really began as he guided mountaineering expeditions in Nepal, Tibet and India. There he worked with and learned from famed National Geographic photographer Galen Rowell. As they traveled the western regions of Tibet and Nepal, Galen fostered Brian's development as a photographer.

Brian supports a wide base of clients around the globe on various commercial and editorial assignments. His professional goal at every shoot is to deliver more than anticipated while creatively capturing the unexpected. His personal goal is to make his clients look great and have fun doing it. By all accounts, Brian has been successful at both.

With studios in San Francisco, Hawaii and the coast of Maine, Brian travels the world on behalf of his clients. When not on assignment, Brian is often found exploring quiet roads by bike near their home in Marin County, California, dreaming of waves in Hawaii, or sailing in Maine with his beautiful wife Malia and their "kids" Hoku (the wonder pup) and Jetsam (A.K.A. Kitty).

Malia is an acclaimed Art Director, Creative Director and can step behind the lens in a heartbeat and make the photo magic happen all on her own. She has traveled the world as a successful actress, sports model and lived in Japan for years working as a stuntwoman (no, we’re not kidding, she can kick butt if needed).

Hawaiian born and raised, Malia (rhymes w/Maria) keeps the Aloha spirit alive and well no matter the workload or deadline. Malia also went to Bowdoin College for undergraduate and also has an MBA, she spent years as a producer, a Creative Director and more recently a five year full time run as the Photo Art Director for Athleta (the fitness/yoga clothing company). When not freelancing with WEDGE Creative, she is often off supporting Athleta's photo shoots around the world.

Malia is smart, sassy, creative and fun. She also serves as our resident linguist (she speaks 3 languages) and like Brian, photographs because she absolutely, positively loves to create. Malia's creativity and energy, along with her incredible experience and thoughtful insights are an amazing addition to everything we do. We think she’s pretty awesome and you will as well!

Brian and Malia own and operate WEDGE Creative as small, sustainably built studios. Their home base is in Mill Valley, California in stunningly beautiful Marin County, just 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco. They also have small seasonal studios on the coast of Maine and on the windward side of Oahu in Hawaii. Every year, Malia directs photo and film shoots worldwide as well as leading creative direction and concepting.

When not knee deep in the planning or implementation of a video/photo/marketing campaign in some exotic land, Malia is a passionate dancer and cook. Afro-Cuban dance, salsa and ballet are all passions. The perfect day for Malia includes cruising in their VW Bus looking for surf, looking for food, looking for campsites or just looking.
